A shock result to the most valuable handicap run in Ireland this season, Magellan Strait the biggest priced winner of the race in recent history, and though the form might not be the strongest, there was no real element of fluke about it; the pace was a fair one in poor conditions and a group of 5 moved clear from 2f out, the winner digging deep to hold off one that was checked in his run at a vital stage.

MAGELLAN STRAIT (IRE) who had been disappointing so far this season, was able to belatedly build on the promise he showed at 3 with a good-value claimer taking over, never far away and knuckling down well to go on close home; handy, progress early in straight, effort when bumped 2f out, challenged final 100 yds, edged ahead close home, dug deep under pressure.

FALCON EIGHT (IRE) who ran well in this race last year, turned in best effort of the season returning from 3 months off, again not really getting the rub of the green; mid-field, headway under 3f out, met some trouble entering final 1f, finished well.

DAWN RISING (IRE) is enjoying a fine season on the level and ran at least as well as he had in the Irish St Leger just 2 weeks ago; in touch, good headway over 2f out, upsides final 100 yds, no extra only late on; he remains one to look forward to over hurdles this season.

JESSE EVANS (IRE) has gone from strength to strength this season and produced a career best back up in trip; handy, close up 2f out, every chance entering final 1f, kept on.

MY MATE MOZZIE (IRE) ran up to best but again gave the impression this is about as much of a test as he wants in the conditions, dropping out of the frame having again traded short in-running; prominent, travelled best, quickened to lead 2f out, ed final 1f, weakening when short of room close home.

FINAL GESTURE (IRE) ran creditably upped in trip returning to handicap company, not ideally placed as things panned out and showing enough to think she's worth persevering with as a stayer; mid-field, steady headway under 3f out, ran on, never nearer.

THE VERY MAN (IRE) had more on his plate after a 7 lb rise for his Ascot win and probably remains in form; mid-division, progress early in straight, in touch 2f out, one paced.

JACKFINBAR (FR) bounced back to form in a race not run to suit, not unduly punished when it was clear he wasn't getting to the principals; held up, headway on inner 3f out, kept on, never nearer.

TOWER OF LONDON (IRE) strong in the betting, might have failed to meet expectations upped in trip and back on softer ground, but is essentially still one to be positive about given how he's progressed in his first season as a stayer, this possibly coming plenty soon enough on the back of his St Leger exploits; mid-division, steady headway over 2f out, one paced.

CHALLY CHUTE (IRE) wasn't seen to best effect and is worth a chance to resume his progression when things are more in his favour; mid-division, steady headway over 2f out, plugged on.

LOT OF JOY (IRE) was an excellent third in this last year but has yet to fully fire this season; mid-field, brief headway over 2f out, effort flattened out.

DARTAN wasn't disgraced with more positive tactics re-employed; prominent, went on early in straight, ridden when hung left 2f out, headed soon after, weakened.

ECHOES IN RAIN (FR) who finished runner-up in the race last season, wasn't seen to best effect having been poorly placed this time around; raced well off the pace, headway around 3f out, never better than mid-field.

LEGENDARY DAY found this too competitive from a career-high mark; in touch, driven 2f out, faded.

NOVEL LEGEND (IRE) up 8 lb for his Goodwood win, found run of good form coming to a halt; handy, lost place over 2f out, not unduly punished.

ST VINCENTS GARDEN (IRE) failed to progress upped in trip for handicap bow; mid-division, ridden over 2f out, made no impression.

HMS SEAHORSE (IRE) followed a good run with a below-par one from the same mark; raced off the pace, steady headway early in straight, never better than mid-field.

TEED UP (IRE) was below form in first-time cheekpieces; held up, ridden under 3f out, made no impression.

SIONNACH EILE (IRE) upped in trip, wasn't in the same form as last time; held up, pushed along entering straight, made little impression.
