A race run in memory of Howard Wright, a founding member of the Racing Post, who worked for Timeform in the '60s, mainly on the groundbreaking Racing Week magazine - a stalwart of racing journalism for 60 years; the field was a representative if not very big one, the obvious star in the division, Kyprios, set to run instead in the Irish St Leger, Sweet William who'd finished behind him at both Royal Ascot and Goodwood not having to improve to land the spoils in his absence; the pace was fair at best, the race testing speed more than stamina.

SWEET WILLIAM (IRE) made the most of a good opportunity, no Kyprios in opposition, signs of quirkiness evident as usual, though his turn of foot was the key factor in a race testing speed more than stamina; slowly into stride, shaken up early, in touch, quickened to lead 2f out, went around 4 lengths clear soon after, ridden final 1f, idled markedly but always holding on; he's likely to remain a fixture in the staying division for a while yet, the Group 2 on Champions Day presumably next.

TRUESHAN (FR) successful over Sweet William in last year's running, couldn't confirm those placings, done for speed before closing late as the winner idled, this about as good as he is these days; close up, took keen hold, led after 2f, kicked on over 3f out, headed 2f out, left behind by winner, kept on well final 100 yds.

POINT LONSDALE (IRE) ran respectably, surprisingly upped another 2f in trip but seeming effective over it, perhaps the return to easier ground in his favour, though this was also one of his lazier efforts, perhaps time for another try in headgear; held up, went in snatches, ridden 4f out, not quicken, stayed on final 1f.

COLTRANE (IRE) isn't the force he was, but he ran respectably, wasting no time getting back to form and running much better than he had in this race last year (won it in 2022), perhaps helped by missing the Lonsdale this time round; handy, shaken up over 3f out, one paced.

GREGORY who sweated up beforehand, wasn't disgraced, the focus on speed rather than stamina, despite the marathon trip, no use to him at all; led 2f, remained prominent, shaken up over 3f out, not quicken, dropped away final 1f.

WISE EAGLE (IRE) was well held, flying too high in this grade; slowly into stride, dropped out, shaken up 4f out, left behind over 2f out, not persevered with once held.
