Some unexposed potentially smart 3-y-os, only one of the field having run more than twice, 4 of the 6 entered in the Edward VII, one of those still in the Derby, though the winner of this hasn't gone on to Epsom since 2016 and won't again, this race nevertheless having a strong record over the last decade of winners than made an impact at a higher level, every chance that will be the case again, even though a steady pace didn't do any of these any favours, least of all the winner, the field finishing in something of a heap and the form hard to rate highly as a result, nevertheless likely to prove better than it looks; the field came right over to the stand side in the last 3f.

LIONEL had shown bags of ability in defeat on his first 2 starts and built on that, up in grade, scoring despite the run of the race and the track, a fair bit more to come when he gets to bring his stamina fully into play; held up, pushed along soon after halfway, not clear run 3f out, headway approaching final 1f, stayed on to lead final 50 yds; he may well follow last year's winner Lone Eagle, runner-up at the Curragh, and contest the Irish Derby next.

ALDOUS HUXLEY (IRE) progressed again, up in grade, dictating in a race with no obvious pace, the ride well judged but left unrewarded after the winner's late thrust; led, took keen hold, shaken up under 2f out, kept on, headed final 50 yds; will go on improving.

LYSANDER the one Derby entry in the field, isn't so imposing as some in this field, but he ran at least as well as last time, this a rather different test, one that didn't entirely suit him, just short of pace at a crucial stage, entered in the Edward VII, though the Queen's Vase might be an option; in touch, shaken up over 2f out, not quicken, kept on inside final 1f; remains open to improvement.

MAKSUD the one runner with just a single outing to his name, was much improved from that debut, giving best only late on, like most of these doing well despite the way the race was run; held up, raced freely, every chance 1f out, no extra final 100 yds; likely to progress further.

MR ALAN had a different profile to the others, given more opportunity to show what he could do, and he was essentially found out in better company, though a tactical race probably wasn't much use to him; in rear, not settle fully, shaken up over 2f out, made no impression.

NATURAL WORLD (IRE) had beaten the winner on debut, that barely a month ago, but he disappointed in appearance, looking to have gone backwards since Lingfield, and also in the race itself, possibly due to the softer ground, though his finishing effort was a tame one even so; tracked pace, shaken up 3f out, weakened under 2f out, eased.
