followed up from Uttoxeter in decisive fashion following a token 2 lb rise, his speed for shorter counting for plenty on this sharp track; soon steadied, shaken up briefly circuit out, good progress out wide 5 out, quickened to lead soon after 3 out, soon clear; he's made a sound start over fences and clearly doesn't need his tongue tying.

ran better than he had when dipping back into a handicap in early-summer, though he's nothing like what he was in his prime; held up, headway under pressure approaching straight, took second run-in, no match for winner; he was found to be lame.

seemed beaten on merit following a 4 lb rise for Exeter, that win on heavy ground but his one last season having come over this C&D under not dissimilar conditions; pressed leader, upsides sixth, seventh, jumped on 4 out, headed soon after next, not quicken.

faced another stiffish task in this grade of handicap but at least looked back in better nick; made most until 4 out, outpaced from next.

failed to capitalise on the drop in grade; waited with, took closer order approaching home turn, ridden entering straight, found little; his 1-12 chase record - with the win in a race that didn't test his mettle - is no coincidence, irresolute as he is.

An unappealing bunch for the level in the grand scheme of things - the runner-up had been running without distinction mostly in hunter chases and the third is a fellow 10-y-o - and the novice winner settled it with a change of pace the placed pair couldn't match.
